Dermatology & Skin-Related Compounding
Dermatology is one of the compounding service categories currently identified by Newberry Express Pharmacy. Compounded medication may sometimes have a role in skin-related care when there is a legitimate prescription or formulation need, but a compounded preparation is not automatically appropriate for every patient or preferable to an available FDA-approved product.
When dermatology compounding may be discussed
Many dermatologic conditions can be treated with commercially manufactured medications. When an appropriate FDA-approved product meets a patient’s needs, there is no reason to assume that a compounded alternative is better simply because it is customized.
Compounding may become relevant when a prescriber identifies a specific medication need that an available product does not appropriately meet. Depending on the prescription, that could involve a dosage-form, strength or ingredient consideration.
The decision begins with the prescriber. A compounding pharmacy’s role is to prepare the prescribed formulation when it is appropriate and within the pharmacy’s capabilities.
Topical dosage forms and formulation questions
Skin medications can be prepared in different topical dosage forms, including concepts such as creams, ointments, gels, lotions or solutions. The choice of dosage form can affect how a medication is applied and may matter to the prescriber when selecting a formulation for an individual patient.
That does not mean Newberry prepares every possible topical product, ingredient or concentration. The exact prescription must be evaluated on its own merits, and availability should be confirmed with the pharmacy rather than assumed from general examples of dermatologic dosage forms.
Individual prescription needs
A compounded dermatology prescription may be considered when a patient has a legitimate formulation need that is not suitably addressed by an available manufactured medication. Examples can include an excipient concern, a required strength or a dosage-form issue, depending on the clinical situation.
Compounding should not be presented as inherently safer, more effective or more suitable than an FDA-approved medication. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness and quality before marketing in the same way it reviews approved drug products.
The useful question is whether the compounded prescription addresses a specific patient need that an available approved product cannot adequately meet.
Newberry’s dermatology compounding service
Newberry Express Pharmacy currently lists Dermatology among its compounding service categories. Specific ingredients, strengths, concentrations and dosage forms depend on the prescription and should be confirmed with the pharmacy.
Patients or prescribers with a skin-related prescription question can discuss the requested formulation with the pharmacy. The pharmacy can then determine whether the prescription is appropriate for its compounding service and whether the requested preparation can be made as prescribed.

Questions to discuss with the prescriber or pharmacist
Before using a compounded dermatology medication, useful questions may include:
- Is there an FDA-approved product that meets the treatment need?
- What specific formulation issue is the compounded prescription intended to address?
- What dosage form has been prescribed and how should it be applied?
- Are there ingredients or excipients that are important to the patient’s individual situation?
- What should the patient do if there is a question about the formulation or how to use it?
Dermatology compounding is one part of Newberry Express Pharmacy’s broader compounding service and is intended for appropriate, prescription-based formulation needs. It is not a cosmetic product catalog, and compounded preparations are not automatically safer, better or more effective than FDA-approved products.
