Amoxicillin 500 mg Capsules

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibacterial medication. In the United States, amoxicillin 500 mg oral capsules are prescription drugs, not over-the-counter products. Current DailyMed records show 500 mg capsule products marketed under approved abbreviated new drug applications (ANDAs).

Amoxicillin 500 mg: product and prescription status

A current DailyMed record updated in October 2025 lists amoxicillin capsules in 250 mg and 500 mg strengths and identifies the product as Rx only. The 500 mg strength is an oral capsule.

Amoxicillin is the generic drug name. Amoxil is a well-known historic brand name, but a familiar brand name does not establish that a particular branded package is currently marketed or available at a given pharmacy. When researching a product today, the more useful identifiers are the active ingredient, strength, dosage form, labeler or distributor, NDC, and package size.

Generic amoxicillin products can differ

Multiple generic amoxicillin records may be active at the same time. For example, one current DailyMed record is packaged by PD-Rx Pharmaceuticals and uses source NDC 0143-9939; the associated labeling identifies Hikma Pharmaceuticals USA as the distributor and Hikma Pharmaceuticals as the manufacturer.

Generic products with the same active ingredient and strength can still differ in practical product details, including:

  • capsule appearance and imprint;
  • inactive ingredients;
  • labeler, distributor, or manufacturer;
  • NDC and package size;
  • the exact product supplied by a wholesaler or pharmacy.

That is why “amoxicillin 500 mg” alone is not enough to identify a particular package.

Price and access research

Amoxicillin 500 mg is available in generic prescription products, but the amount a patient pays can vary. Relevant factors include the specific product and package, pharmacy pricing, insurance or prescription-benefit terms, deductibles, copays, and whether a pharmacy is in network.

For a meaningful price comparison, match the same 500 mg capsule strength, quantity, and product type. A cash quote for one package may not match an insured price for another.

A valid prescription is required in the United States. The legacy /purchase/ URL does not mean that Newberry Express Pharmacy currently stocks a specific amoxicillin product or package.

What to verify before obtaining amoxicillin

Before a prescription is filled, verify the information on the actual product and prescription:

  • active ingredient: amoxicillin;
  • strength: 500 mg when that is the prescribed strength;
  • dosage form: capsule versus another amoxicillin formulation;
  • NDC, labeler, and package size when a specific product matters;
  • allergy and medication information with the prescriber or pharmacist;
  • pharmacy-network and coverage details if insurance is being used.

Antibiotics should be used only for bacterial infections for which they are prescribed. The FDA-approved labeling specifically warns that unnecessary antibacterial use contributes to drug resistance.
