Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure Monitoring
Blood pressure and glucose measurements can provide useful information over time. They are interpreted differently, however, and a single reading is not a complete diagnosis or treatment plan.
Current blood-pressure categories
The American Heart Association currently uses these adult blood-pressure categories:

These categories replace the older “prehypertension” framework that appeared in legacy materials. A healthcare professional should confirm a diagnosis and interpret readings in the context of the individual.
Tracking blood pressure over time can help show patterns and can give a healthcare professional more information about how treatment is working.
Blood glucose targets are individualized
Blood glucose monitoring can be important for many people with diabetes, but target ranges are not one-size-fits-all. The American Diabetes Association's 2026 Standards of Care emphasize individualized glycemic goals based on factors such as health status, treatment risks, hypoglycemia risk, treatment burden, and personal circumstances.
If glucose readings are unexpectedly high or low, or if a medication regimen is not working as expected, discuss the pattern with the appropriate healthcare professional rather than changing prescription treatment independently.
